Hybrid drive systems with energy storage are ideal for city buses used in urban transport because of its frequent start stop operation, low average speed and power requirement. Compared to a conventional city bus fuel savings up to 30% can be achieved. In the paper different storage technologies are compared regarding their suitability for the city bus application. The newest ELFA energy storage system based on double layer capacitor modules is presented.
