It is probably safe to say that most electric utilities are either evaluating a possible transition, attempting to make a transition, or already making the transition for implementing some form of IP based networks in their electric utility substations. It has been stated that the primary benefits of adopting an IP based network which includes a local area network (LAN) within the substation is: increased bandwidth, increased system flexibility and expandability, data redundancy, security, and cost-savings by providing both remote monitoring and remote management capability.
