Moving Ethernet from the Corporate Office to Substations: Utilization of Ethernet Technologies to provision multiple services at substations

Ethernet has matured as a communications protocol and is no longer reserved for corporate or metropolitan network. It is making serious inroads as a transport vehicle for SCADA in electric substations as electric utility companies seek to improve delivery and availability of electric power to their customers safely and reliably. As a part of its role in the country's development, the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited has begun adopting Ethernet in its substations to enhance power delivery to its customers This paper discusses the JSP rationale for making the move and discusses how Ethernet allows multiple services such as serial over IP, teleprotection schemes, and Video and Voice over IP to be possible.
