New Hydropower Development on the Ohio River

This paper summarizes the navigation development of the Ohio River, the existing and potential hydropower of the Ohio River, and presents an overview and status of the ongoing development of three new hydropower projects on the Ohio River. American Municipal Power-Ohio, Inc. (AMP-Ohio) is developing the three projects at existing US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) locks and dams. The projects will develop about 191 MW of renewable energy. The Willow Island Hydroelectric Project is located at the Willow Island Locks and Dam and will be a two-unit powerhouse with an estimated generation capacity of 35 MW. The Cannelton Hydroelectric project is located at Cannelton Locks and Dam and will be a three-unit powerhouse with an estimated capacity of 82 MW. The Smithland Hydroelectric project is located on the Kentucky shore at the Smithland Locks and Dam and will be a three-unit powerhouse with an estimated capacity of 74 MW.
