Nano-crystalline barium hexaferrite (BF) with mean crystallite size from 45 to 60 nm was synthesized using a coupled mechano-chemical processing. Initially co-precipitated product from aqueous solutions of iron and barium chlorides with a Fe/Ba molar ratio of 11 was mechanically milled employing low energy jar mill, medium energy ball mill and high energy planetary mill. The non-milled and milled co-precipitated materials were then annealed at various temperatures. XRD and DTA/TGA results showed that the intermediate milling affects the reaction kinetics during post synthesis annealing; and reduces the formation temperature of BF. SEM studies showed that the mean particle size of BF was affected by intermediate milling process.
