Catalytic steam reforming of fast pyrolysis bio-oil was carried out in a fixed bed reactor system to investigate the gas product distribution, liquid by-product composition and carbon deposition behavior on the catalyst. The results show that higher hydrogen mole fraction, hydrogen yield and C-containing gas products yield were obtained at relatively higher temperature. Through GC-MS analysis, it can be concluded that some unreacted components of bio-oil exist in the liquid by-product because of uncompleted steam reforming reactions. And in steam reforming system, chain scission, polymerization, and cyclization processes occur to form the tar compounds. TG and SEM analysis of reacted catalyst indicate that for the feedstock of crude bio-oil, carbon deposition on catalyst surface is severe even under the conditions of high temperature, high steam to carbon ratio and short time duration.
