Orion Project System Optimization Methodology Overview

NASA's next generation human spacecraft, the Orion, found itself significantly over its mass and power targets as it neared its System Definition Review. This paper describes the process used to perform a major mass scrub on NASA's Orion spacecraft. The process involved three components: a vehicle foundation assessment, subsystem reviews and analysis, and risk balancing. The process was successful in removing over 2500 kg of mass from the Orion spacecraft while maintaining functionality.
