Various methods have been used to measure black carbon contents in earthern materials; these are chemical treatment, thermal oxidation and petrographic analysis. Earthen materials such as soils and sediments are very heterogeneous and it is likely that different methods yield different amounts of black carbon. Furthermore, very few studies have used more than one method to measure black carbon. In this work, chemical treatment, petrographic analysis and thermal oxidation were used to measure black carbon contents in several urban soils, sediments from two urban lakes and sediments from two different hydrostratigraphic units of a Central Illinois Groundwater aquifer.
