Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered to be one of the most promising nanomaterials, having significant potential in drug delivery, electric and optical devices and energy storage In the environmental science and engineering community there is concern related to the potential human health and ecological consequences after widespread dispersal of nanomaterials in environmental systems. In order to determine the risks nanoparticles may pose to groundwater resources, it is essential to understand the factors that govern nanoparticle mobility. Greater mobility could lead to nanoparticles traveling larger distances and, thus, greater potential for human exposure. Understanding the mobility of nanoparticles in porous media will help regulate the release of nanomaterials, assess the ability of traditional water treatment plants to remove them as well as facilitate the application of engineered nanoparticles for site remediation.
