HYDRODESULFURIZATION FOR CLEANER AIR. HDS OF DIBENZOTHIOPHENE AND ITS HYDROGENATED INTERMEDIATES OVER SULFIDED Mo/γ-Al2O3

Hydrodesulfurization is the removal of sulfur atoms from sulfur- containing molecules in oil feed stocks by hydrogenation of the sulfur to hydrogen sulfide. Legislation that is in place, or will soon be introduced, in the USA, Europe, and Japan demands very low sulfur levels in fuels. Because of this urgent need for lowering the sulfur level, industries in Western countries have opted for improving the conventional hydrotreating process that is used today in the refinery industry. Such improved technologies and catalysts for deeper removal of sulfur from naphtha and gasoil will be discussed. Alternative sulfur-removal methods, such as adsorption and oxidation of sulfur-containing molecules followed by separation, might have applications in countries that must install additional desulfurization units, or even grass-root refineries.
