This paper provides an update on the research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) efforts of advanced second generation post-combustion carbon dioxide (CO_2) capture technologies for coal-based power systems being conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). The paper reviews the status of 20 new post-combustion projects that were initiated in late 2011. DOE's Fossil Energy Program has adopted a comprehensive, multi-pronged approach to the RD&D of advanced second generation CO_2 capture technologies for coal-based power plants. Critical RD&D targets include the completion of laboratory-, small pilot-, and large pilot-scale testing of a broad spectrum of CO_2 capture approaches, including advanced solvents, sorbents, and membranes, to facilitate demonstration-scale testing of the most promising technologies after 2020. It is anticipated that successful progression from laboratory- through demonstration-scale testing will result in several of these advanced technologies being available for commercial deployment by 2030.
