The importance of reagent uniformity entering high performance selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactors has been firmly established. Not so clearly established is the most efficient method of accomplishing this task. Throughout the last decade, installations based on the practical application of mixing science have proven highly successful. Yet the demands placed on SCR system designs have generally increased during this period as well. SCR retrofit projects often have limited available space for the arrangement, resulting in shorter available mixing distances. Simultaneously, nitrogen oxides (NO_x) removal requirements have typically increased, dictating more stringent and stable blends. A short review of the process requirements and mixing function is provided, followed by a further discussion on the development and research into gaseous mixing for SCR applications. Data related to device performance effectiveness and efficiencies are presented, as well as actual site performance results.
