GEA Niro has developed and applied a novel spray dryer absorber (SDA) design at several sites in China for controlling acid gas emissions from coal-based sinter production plants. The modified design features a flat bottom, eliminating the hopper under the spray absorber to enhance SDA operation and reduce the overall emission control system costs. A comparison of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling of the new design and a traditional SDA design is presented. Inspection photos from three installations demonstrate the extent of solids accumulation in the SDA chambers. Field measurements of drying performance from one of the initial flat bottom SDA arrangements are presented.
