MHIA and Southern Company have been awarded a DOE project to demonstrate the benefits of heat integration with MHI's High Efficiency System (HES) for the CO_2 capture facility located at Plant Barry. The HES has proven to be an effective multi-pollutant control technology for SO_2, SO_3, PM, PM2.5 and trace elements in multiple plants. The HES recovers waste heat from the flue gas by incorporating a flue gas cooler downstream of the air pre-heater and makes the heat available for use in the power plant. The recovered heat will be applied to the boiler condensate thereby reducing the energy penalty for amine based CO_2 capture plants. In addition, the HES will reduce amine emissions from the CO_2 capture facility by eliminating SO_3 which has been found to have a significant impact on emissions. This paper presents the benefits of the HES and design and test guidelines for the demo project.
