In this manuscript, we demonstrate experimentally the generation of U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-compliant ultra-wideband (UWB) waveforms based on direct modulation of semiconductor distributed-feedback laser, optical filtering and chromatic dispersion effect in single-mode fiber. The intensity modulation and the frequency modulation of the directly modulated laser are combined by the optical filter, which performs a photonic electro-optical derivative operation. The laser oscillation effect as well as the influence of chromatic dispersion in single-mode fiber are studied. Higher-order derivative of Gaussian pulse, which satisfies Federal Communications Commission regulation for indoor wireless communications, are obtained with precise laser control and dispersion management.
