The Effect of Holder in the Triggered Vacuum Switch

A triggered vacuum switch (TVS) is a switching device widely used in a high power system. It is switched-on by a plasma arc generated in an internal trigger unit (TU) and main electrode. The main electrode is composed of an anode and a cathode. The TU is assembled a trigger pin, an insulator and a holder. The initial plasma is generated in the TU and propagated into the gap between the anode and the cathode. The beginning process of plasma generation in the TU is delicate, because it is affected by all TU components. However, the initial generating process of the main electrode is simple, because it is induced by the plasma generated in the TU. In this research, we have investigated the TU, especially have focused on the structure and material of the holder. In general, the life time and stable operation in TVS are decided by the metal layer coated on the ceramic insulator which is originated from main electrode and holder. Before researching the metal layer, we have searched for the relations of between operation conditions and two holder types. Operation conditions are investigated on a trigger voltage, current and resistance for fabricating a concave and a convex type holder with Al and Mo.
