In India several institutes are developing pulsed power system and using them for a number of applications. Capacitor banks are developed for many applications. Largest among the fast capacitor banks (1.2 MJ) is developed for fusion applications (magnetized target fusion and plasma focus) and generating pulsed high magnetic fields. Capacitors banks have also been developed for electromagnetic forming, electrohydraulic forming, hyper-velocity projectile launcher (electric gun, rail gun), shocks and flux compression. Marx banks have been developed as a feed to water and castor oil pulse forming lines (coax and blumlien). Largest Marx bank is 5MV, 250kJ feeding a water pulse forming line. Repetitively pulsed Marx banks have been developed as driver to pulsed high power microwave devices (virtual cathode oscillator, reflex triode etc.). These have typical energies of few kJ at few hundred kV, rise time of few hundred ns and repetition rate of ~10Hz. Very fast Marx banks, typically with few ns rise-time and few joules of energy as an input to impulse radiating antenna as an ultra wide band radio frequency generator, have also been developed. Several gigawatt to terawatt systems has been developed. These typically have a Marx bank or a Tesla transformer as the first system followed by water or oil pulse forming network. These systems are being used for driving higher energy high power microwave system, flash radiography, fusion related studies among other application. Linear Induction accelerators (LIA) and induction voltage adders (IVA) are also being developed. Several applications such as sterilization (electroporation), pollution control with the aid of pulsed power are also being investigated. The presentation will discuss the progress made in these areas in detail.
