The last five years have seen a rapid growth in power of solid state fiber lasers. Improvements of beam quality enabled by virtue of this technology have also made possible new processing opportunities whereby the paradigms for macro cutting and welding with CO_2 and Nd:YAG lasers need to be rethought. This presentation is a synthesis of prior technical studies and presentations given on such matters, with empirical examples of how high beam quality from fiber lasers can allow a user do more with less than what one has become accustomed to.
