Friction stir technology has been demonstrated as a plausible route for solid state additive manufacturing. Mechanical properties of a Mg alloy build fabricated by FSAM surpassed the wrought bulk properties. FSAM shows the ability to explore property space that has heretofore been unavailable to other additive manufacturing techniques by exercising greater control over the microstructure.
