Replenishment at sea has been standardized under the NATO Authority and both equipments and procedures have to be compliant with ATP16 in order to allow flexibility and be interchangeable within the different navies of NATO countries. ATP16 standard derives from the US experience during Pacific, Korean and Vietnam wars. From these times, many things have changed, including size of ships, budget constraints, difficulties to recruit crews, Technologies, and more specifically information technologies have changed, but also materials, sensors, engineering methods. The aims of this paper is to present an analysis of underway replenishment operation, using the system engineering approach instead of the classical components based static approach of the design, and how new solutions may be derived for improved performances and safety.
