Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) essentially deal with the conversion of electrical power from one frequency and voltage to another. Inductive components are vital to SMPS circuits and ferrite cores are a common choice for the magnetic material used in the inductive components. The performance of any ferrite core material depends primarily on the amplitude and nature of time-variation of the magnetic flux density impressed upon it at the operating temperature. The time-variation of magnetic flux density includes the time-period of repetitive variation (1/frequency) and the waveform of variation. In general the nature of variation of magnetic flux is not sinusoidal for SMPS. The presentation aims at providing design help in the form of ready nomogram for power ferrite material selection taking into account the above point.
