In a series of demonstrations between February 2006 and January 2007, the USAF Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Battlelab (UAVB) successfully conducted the Advanced Video Data Optimization (V-D-O) initiative. The demonstrations introduced a new generation of media (video, audio, metadata, etc.) compression and management hardware and software for unmanned platforms. Highlighted technologies included H.264 encoding/decoding, key-length-value (KLV) indexing/search, annotation, overlays (no burn in), web based display, and media transcoding to handhelds. All technologies are designed to be Motion Imagery Standards Profile (MISP) compliant per the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). In the associated presentation to this paper for AUVSI North America 2007, Chad Partridge of Sensing Systems LLC (Sensing) emphasized Sensing's participation in the V-D-O initiative and, in particular, highlight the dissemination of live, transcoded media from Predator unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) to Java based, web applications for improved situational awareness.
