This is a summary of a yearlong study of the civil market for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in the United States. The emergence of this market and forces influencing its growth are discussed. Five promising civil UAS applications are described. These are likely to drive market growth in the coming decade. Most involve UAS operations for civil government organizations. A scenario for civil UAS market growth is described. Projections for civil UAS sales and unmanned aircraft production between 2008 and 2017 are presented.
