The Huntsman Corporation was founded by John Huntsman in the 1970's, and grew to be the largest privately held chemical company in the USA, mainly as a result of acquisitions. In 1999 the Huntsman Corporation acquired a number of businesses from Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). These businesses included ICI's Base Chemicals, Polyurethanes and Tioxide businesses, with assets throughout the world but with a significant asset base at Teesside in the United Kingdom. The acquisition of the ICI businesses doubled the size of the Huntsman Corporation, which by 2004 had assets in 22 countries and employed approximately 11,300 people. The Huntsman Group turnover was 11.3 billion dollars in 2004.
