An Assessment Method of Marine Gas Turbine Propulsion Systems

A prototype integrated marine simulation environment has been developed. It encompasses the numerical model of a ship coupled to a gas turbine propulsion system, a simplified weather model, hull model and journey models. It is used here to present the performance of two simple cycle marine gas turbines installed on a Ropax monohull fast ferry, operating in a typical constant speed service route. Three different example journey scenarios are simulated. In the first scenario the ambient temperature of air is used as input variable, in the second scenario, sea condition is added as second input variable, and in the third scenario hull fouling is used as third input variable. The results which are ship speed, engine power, turbine entry temperature, fuel flow, journey time and total fuel consumption are presented and discussed.
