The enormous efficiency gains in computer technology and optoelectronics in the last ten years have led to increased performance and thus to new opportunities for applying optical and thermal measuring techniques. These methods can make a significant contribution to materials and components testing. They are particularly interesting for polymer materials due to their properties, such as temperature and time dependence as well as frequently anisotropic and non-linear behavior. The goal of the non-contacting and non-reactive techniques presented here is to detect deformation and/or strain in test specimens or component surfaces stemming from mechanical and/or thermal load. Exclusively contour detection methods will not be discussed. The techniques presented are based on various measurement methods for performing punctiform, linear and/or planar analyses.
