Beta nucleation of polypropylene can be used to improve existing products and produce new products in several different market areas. The benefits of beta nucleation include impact enhancement with only minor stiffness loss, reducing the weight and cost of thermoformed packaging [1], producing microporous and breathable films, and reducing the weight and cost of geosynthetic and carpet backing products. We have developed a new generation of beta nucleant masterbatch which gives much more powerful nucleation and overcomes the limitation of earlier nucleants. This 3rd generation product can be used at very low addition level and works in the presence of interfering alpha nucleants including talc. In this paper we will summarize the applications where beta nucleation is used, and present data showing how our high activity 3~(rd) generation product can lead to lighter weight, lower cost products with unique visual characteristics.
