The size and weight reduction of portable medical devices continues to be a common trend. Traditional methods of using large bulk storage capacitors in parallel banks with the battery often require too much space. This requirement is driving tantalum capacitor manufacturers to further reduce the bulk capacitor package size and at the same time not sacrifice performance. New improved tantalum packaging construction ideal for bulk capacitor applications has been developed by Vishay. The miniaturized package utilizes a pellet to copper attachment technique optimizing DCL and inductance, while improving reliability. The paper describes the various packaging options available for Tantalum capacitors and important characterization data for use in battery applications.
