This presentation covers the concepts of delivering MPEG broadcast video streams via IP Multicast. An increasing number of IP-based broadband networks (including those based on Passive Optical Networks or point-to-point fiber networks) are turning to IP Multicast for the delivery of real-time video broadcast. One of the key advantages to using an IP-based video delivery system is that the network infrastructure can be simplified by eliminating the overhead of additional equipment necessary to support a dedicated lambda for the delivery of video. In most cases, the Service Provider already provides the customer with IP Internet service offerings. Still others offer telephony services over the same IP network. It only makes sense to make the migration to a complete IP-based "triple-play" service offering by providing video services over the same IP infrastructure. Traditional IP-based video streaming broadcasts in the Internet have been based on a pure unicast model. The disadvantage to this method should be obvious from Figure 1 below.
