Regulation and Authorisation -- Uranium Exploration and Mining in the Northern Territory

The Northern Territory offers a unique snapshot of the regulatory regimes applied to the exploration for, and mining and development of, uranium operations at a state and federal level. The application of a risk assessment framework and the development and implementation of systems to the management of the environmental aspects and safety hazards related to mining activities allow modern mining operators to adopt leading practice when dealing with site specific issues, not constrained by prescriptive regulation. This paper addresses the application and implementation of the Mining Management Act when dealing with mining, and exploration, projects in the Northern Territory and touches on the interactions between State and Commonwealth legislation as a guide for practitioners.
