CONSIDERING SPECIAL WELDING APPLICATIONS AND ECONOMY IN WELDING

In excerpts from a forthcoming AISC Design Guide, the author explores first, special welding applications and their requirements, including welding on anchor rod, coated steels, heavy sections, heavily restrained members, hollow structural shapes; and architecturally exposed structural steel; as well as shop vs. field welding, welding on existing structures, and heat shrinking. In the second excerpt, he addresses methods of achieving economy in welding, including proper selection of weld type, and choosing weld details that will minimize costs. The author stresses that with weld repair costs estimated as high as ten times the cost of an initial weld, the lowest cost weld will always be the one that is made only once.
