The seismic provisions for building structures contained within the model building codes were developed to predominantly address commercial and institutional buildings. This paper discusses the implications and application of current seismic provisions on design and construction of steel framed industrial buildings; specifically, what aspects distinguish typical industrial buildings from commercial buildings and how do these aspects affect how we design these buildings with regards to seismic loads. The paper includes current design requirements as outlined in the International Building Code (IBC), the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC), AISC and CSA/CISC. In addition, this paper touches on design of often encountered non-building structures that are contained within these facilities (bins and hoppers, tanks, ground supported conveyors) and provides direction as to what standards are available for the design of these non-building structures (in addition to the provisions provided in IBC/NBCC).
