Steel Member Design for Direct Blast Loads: A Brief Summary of Recommended Practice Deficiencies and Recent Research

Guidance for steel member design to resist direct blast loads has been extant in varying documents in the literature for some 20-25 years. Research sponsored by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), US Government's Counter Terrorism Technology Support Office Technical Support Working Group (CTTSO/TSWG) and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) is being performed to supplement these guidelines and approaches with much needed data and practices. This paper and companion presentation presents a brief overview of state-of-the-practice design approaches and the limitations of those approaches for steel columns, column base plates, beams and connections subjected to direct blast loads. Preliminary results of the tests performed to date and plans for further research and testing are presented and the applicability of these results to limitations of the practice is discussed.
