Improvement of Wear Resistance of the Rolling Plant Piercing Mill Mandrels

The process of making seamless tubes includes the step of piercing solid billets with a properly shaped axisymmetric mandrel. Improvement of the mandrel longevity and wear resistance thru development of a rational piercing tool grounding on the existing piercing process is an issue of the day. Mandrels of known designs are used in making seamless tubes. The mandrels for crossroll piercers include the following sections; a nose, a profiled tapered working surface, a cylindrical sizing section and a back relief section [1].
