Although Advanced Oxidation has been around for many years, it is only in the past 5 years that the Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) has gained much recognition in the market. The attention and growth of the AOP market can be attributed to two factors: 1) With Emerging Contaminants becoming a hot topic in Europe and North America, there is a need for advanced oxidation of persistent substances, which are not easily treated with traditional technologies such as chlorine or ozone. 2) Advanced Oxidation systems manufacturers have successfully created a market for AOP to be used in more traditional applications such as Taste & Odor (T&O) in drinking water. Today, industry tends to view AOP as a UV + Hydrogen Peroxide technology. Consulting engineers and potential end users are in need of a cost- effective solution to treat their contaminant of concern, not necessarily a specific technology. This paper provides an overview of the various Advanced Oxidation Processes available in the market and provides a comparison of these technologies to help identify which Advanced Oxidation Process is best for a given application.
