Greater Vancouver Embarks on its Second World Class Ultraviolet Disinfection Project

The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD), located in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada, wholesales water to 18 municipalities, which in turn deliver water to over 2 million people. Water is collected from three closed mountainous watersheds: Capilano, Seymour, and Coquitlam. The upgrades planned for the treatment acilities located at the unfiltered Coquitlam watershed, include the expansion of an existing ozone generation facility, and the addition of a new 320 MGD (1,200 ML/d) UV Disinfection facility, scheduled to be operational in 2010. This project is required to meet new Health anada guidelines for Cryptosporidium inactivation, and disinfection by-products (DBPs). This paper will provide an overview of the preliminary design process, describing the investigations and rationale leading to the established design criteria. The GVRD is in the process of coordinating a pilot study to evaluate the potential impacts of the unfiltered ozonated water supply on sleeve fouling. Available data will be presented at the time of the conference.
