As drinking water resources, surface waters remain vulnerable and prone to contamination by a wide range of micro-organisms, including emerging pathogens, the resistance to disinfectants of which is variable. Accordingly, health safety is assured by the multiplication of treatment stages in a strategic “multi barrier” approach. The ozonation stage plays an essential role in the disinfection of water and, in particular, in the inactivation of viruses, bacteria and some parasites (Giardia). The new operational practices in place in the treatment plants of the Syndicat des Eaux d’Ile de France enable us to optimize the ozonation stage and comply with the regulations concerning the formation of disinfection by-products by seeking to limit the formation of bromates without compromising the aims of disinfection.
