A utility's specification for preservative treated wood poles communicates exacting information to suppliers, both current and potential, about what is necessary to produce a product that meets or exceeds specified requirements. There are two fundamental sets of specifications for preservative treated wood poles from which utility specifiers generally draw: (1) The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 05.1 and (2) American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) standards. ANSI 05.1 provides minimum specifications for the quality and dimensions for wood poles to be used as single pole utility structures. AWPA provides specifications for the preservative treatment of wood products. Both are consensus based standards organizations.
