Third Party-Style Sampling Versus Plant Sampling: Impact on Variability

This paper presents information illustrating the variability in penetration and retention testing used to perform quality control for batches of pressure treated wood in accordance with AWPA standards. Some increase in variability is noted for samplestaken in the manner typical of 3rd party inspection agencies compared to treating plants. Implications for interpreting industry standards as well as future changes to those standards are discussed.
