INTEGRATED WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT FOR ZAMBIA: SATELLITE-DERIVED GEO-INFORMATION TO SUPPORT POLICY- AND DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES
Providing for daily water needs is a burden on households with inadequate services in a number of ways. Inadequate water supplies are both a cause and an effect of poverty. One of the factors which constrain the water supply and sanitation sector is insufficient information and communication which leads to inadequate institutional arrangements, lack of political commitment, insufficient community involvement and inadequate operation and maintenance. The ESA funded TIGER Innovator project "Integrated Water Resources Management for Zambia" (IWAREMA Zambia) aims at improving the data situation by developing EO-derived spatial data inputs for an integrated management concept for Zambia's water resources. The concept is set up by Zambian government, represented in the project by the Zambian ministries in charge of water management and the University of Zambia. A multi-sensor and multi-resolution approach is applied using an object-oriented image processing techniques. Service-provider- and user-side validation have shown results that are fully satisfying the end-user requirements.
