Review on offshore winds in Northern Europe using available satellite data, mesoscale model results and offshore observations. The presentation will provide state-of-the-art on offshore wind mapping techniques and provide an overview of the entire Norsewind study area as well as details on specific coastal locations including Horns Rev in the North Sea. The Norsewind study area encompasses the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the Irish Sea. The satellite information includes wind maps based on Envisat ASAR, QuikSCAT and ASCAT observations. These sources are analysed in respect to diurnal variations, compared to in-situ data and to Review on offshore winds in Northern Europe using available satellite data, mesoscale model results and offshore observations. The presentation will provide state-of-the-art on offshore wind mapping techniques and provide an overview of the entire Norsewind study area as well as details on specific coastal locations including Horns Rev in the North Sea. The Norsewind study area encompasses the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the Irish Sea. The satellite information includes wind maps based on Envisat ASAR, QuikSCAT and ASCAT observations. These sources are analysed in respect to diurnal variations, compared to in-situ data and to some selected scenarios also modeled by mesoscale wind resource versions of the WRF model (Weather Research and Forecast Model). Furthermore, the aims for future research and demonstration relevant for offshore wind farming are discussed. The work is part of the Ell-funded project Norsewind.
