STRUCTURAL ANALYSES FOR EXISTING TELECOMMUNICATION TOWER WITH ADDITIONAL SMALL WIND TURBINE

An existing ALCATEL-LUCENTs 50-m tall lattice type self-supporting antenna tower has been analyzed for a post-installed 2.5 kW wind turbine. The existing design has been evaluated for the turbine dynamic mechanical load and for static wind load exerting on the structure itself, new wind turbine, existing antennas and all other miscellaneous appurtenances. The evaluation and design have been performed for the maximum wind speed of 160 km/hr and operational wind speed of 112 km/hr per EIA/TIA 222 (F). SAP2000 and TOWER software have been implemented for dynamic analysis/fatigue design input and ultimate limit state design, respectively. In addition to the evaluation of the steel structure, the foundations have been analyzed and evaluated under additional dynamic loading from wind turbine operation. The off-grid green base stations will help service providers to meet their need for reliable and sustainable power for remote locations and will enable service providers to gain the benefit of new subscribers, lower operating costs, and a reduced carbon footprint. As part and outcome of this project, MITENG developed and applied an analytic approach to identify, evaluate and hassle the dynamic impact of the post-installation of small wind turbines on the subject existing telecommunication tower. The same approach can be applied to design new antenna towers supporting wind turbine for remote areas.
