Sustainable design is a comprehensive, holistic approach to creating products and systems that are environmentally benign, socially equitable and economically viable. Fuel-efficient cars, solar-heated buildings and recyclable packaging are dramatic examples of products that help balance consumer needs with good environmental stewardship. Yet, all products have the potential to be designed with sustainability in mind if engineers really think about making products better while using materials that positively affect the environment. In addition to discussing how to implement the practical aspects of sustainable design, this session will also address why this new way of thinking so economically important. Attendees will hear how some savvy, worldwide companies in industries ranging from furniture to flooring and telecommunications to tools have already put years of efforts into incorporating some sustainable design elements to gain a competitive edge in the global market.
