Nano-sol was used in the anti-pilling finishing of wool fabrics. The effect of different surface modifications of wool fabric on anti-pilling property was examined. The effect of nano-sol and the promotion agent on anti-pilling was studied. A new finish process to achieve both well fabric handle and anti-pilling property was developed, and the process procedure and the recipe were optimized in order to meet the requirements of industry. The surface morphological structure of treated fabric was examined with SEM technique, and the reasons for wool fabric pilling and the mechanism of anti-pilling were preliminarily investigated by SEM and FTIR-ATR analyses. The results showed that the anti-pilling property of wool fabrics treated with the sol-gel technology is improved from pilling rating 2 to 3.5, with a compromised soft handle and good fastness against washing.
