Validation and skill assessment of environmental models is an essential (but non-trivial) task if we are to monitor and successfully predict change in the Earth system. Uncertainties exist in both the model and the observations used to evaluate them. Understanding the outputs of such models requires data simplification. Previously evaluation of environmental models has tended to concentrate on continuous verification techniques (e.g. root mean squared error). More recently categorical verification approaches have proven useful (e.g. receiver operator curves). Advanced methods include feature orientated techniques, and scale and error decomposition.
