The surfaces of mechanical and precision components have a decisive influence on: 1) tribological behavior 2) dimensional precision of solid body contacts 3) fatigue strength. These important aspects are influenced, in turn, by the structure of the surfaces. The surface structures of solid bodies can be classified according to their characteristic feature size into meso, micro (e.g. roughness and waviness) and nanostructures.
