We studied the soil-to-crop transfer of <'131>I in cowpea after factitious contamination of three texturally different soils with <'131>I, ranging from 20 to 80kBq·kg<'-1> in a pot experiment. The results showed that the <'131>I accumulation in the plant tissues, uptake and transfer factors were all influenced by both the level of <'131>I contamination and the texture of the soil. Uptake and TF were lowest in sandy clay loam and highest in loam. While the <'131>I uptake by the crop showed a positive correlation, the TF were inversely related to the level of <'131>I contamination. The TF varied from 0.1798 to 0.6387 (whole plant). More <'131>I accumulation was observed in the stem than in the leaves and roots.
