The goal of this study was to investigate the distribution of total and ammonium bicarbonate-DTPA- extractable (AB-DTPA) V of representative Greek and Egyptian soils and examined their relationship to soil properties. For this purpose twenty-one soil profiles varied widely in their origin and properties from Egypt and Greece representing the main soil orders were sampled in this study and analysed for total (extracted by using HNO<,3>-HCl-H<,2>O<,2>) and AB-DTPA-extractable vanadium (used as an availability index). Total V concentrations varied widely between the studied soils ranging from 23.3mg/kg in the sandy marine deposits to 178.8mg/kg in the lacustrine deposits and were significantly correlated with clay content, silt content, cation exchange capacity and CBD extractable- Fe and Mn (positively) and sand content, organic matter content, and calcium carbonate equivalent (negatively). AB-DTPA-extractab- V varied from 0.55g/kg in the Greek Entisol to 4.38mg/kg in the lacustrine Egyptian deposits. AB- DTPA-extractabl-V concentrations were significantly correlated with soil pH, clay content, silt content, cation exchange capacity and the total amounts (positively) and sand content (negatively). Relative top soil enhancement ratio (the ratio of V concentration in topsoil to that in subsoil) of total and available V varied largely between soil profiles being influenced by parent material, particle size distribution, sesquioxides content, soil pH, as well as the drainage condition of the studied soils.
