Our studies aim at investigating metal accumulation in algae cultures and in periphyton, as related to measured speciation parameters in freshwaters. Cadmium accumulation in laboratory cultures of Scenedesrnus vacuolatus in different freshwaters was not simply related to measured free Cd<'2+> nor to labile Cd. Kinetics of cadmium accumulation in periphyton were examined and related to labile Cd measured by DGT. Additional factors influencing metal accumulation have to be considered.
