The goal of the project is the development of a generic software tool, which allows a quick assessment of the environmental impact of waste co-processing in the cement industry compared to various other waste treatment alternatives. The tool shall be flexible in terms of (1) different technological standards in the industries examined, and (2) chemical compositions of waste types. The model and tool will be developed in close collaboration with industry, in particular the cement industry. The tool is intended for industrial and regulatory decision makers to identify resource and emission saving potentials through environmentally optimal substitution for traditional fuels and raw materials with wastes in cement production. Furthermore, the environmental net benefit or detriment of waste co-processing can be calculated by comparing it to alternative waste treatments. Hence, the tool assists the optimization of waste flows in order to minimize the overall impact of waste treatment and disposal.
